A Guide to Wood Science

The study of wood as a renewable material and organic material is what is known as wood science. In other words, the term wood science can also be known as wood technology. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The many Merits of timber and these technologies improve wood to be superior over other products. Wood can be applied in very many applications, and this gives it an upper hand over other materials. Once a tree has been cut down another can be planted in the same spot. All the parts of wood can be put into use, and this makes it a better fit than other materials which most of their byproducts are a waste.

For your wooden products and house to stay for long and have a good appearance it needs to be protected. Wooden structures have to be kept away from water and pests that eat through the wood. The water particles in the timber increase the rotting and the insects bore through the wood. Many methods are available in the treatment of wood one of the most common being the ACQ – alkaline copper Quaternary. The protection of from this chemical is based on copper. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The concentration of the chemical that will be used to treat a piece of wood will depend on the where it is going to be used and the molecular structure of the wood. Timber being used around a water body will be dipped in a more saturated fluid than that being used above ground.

Another wood treating method that is fast being accepted is the use of copper metal. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. In this process microscopic particles of solid copper metal are mixed in a liquid carrier and injected to the wood at high pressure. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. When this process is used to treat timber the timber properties are increased highly. The wood products protected using this method last longer.

Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. It has also shown to be an improvement in corrosion resistant properties to metal fasteners. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
